Standardized Test Accommodations and Special Education Services

Obtaining accommodations such as extra time on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Law School Admission Test (LSAT), as well as many other state and national tests are often requested of the staff at Howard Learning Assessment Services. This service is essential for those individuals who either have a history of learning disabilities, or who suspect that neurocognitive challenges may be compromising their abilities. Documentation and testing of various skills and capacities need to take place in order that accommodations be considered. The staff at Howard Learning Assessment Services are skilled in the administration and interpretation of the various tests that are needed to satisfy the academic institutions and bodies that make determinations about the need for these services. Although the accommodation most often sought involves obtaining extra time on tests, other services such as having a reader, working on a computer, having a scribe, and taking tests in a quiet room with few others and frequent breaks, are just a few of the accommodations that are often obtained.

In addition, the staff at Howard Learning Assessment Services are often called upon to perform comprehensive evaluations in order to assess learning and attentional difficulties in the process of petitioning public schools for students to receive special education services. The specific tests and areas of functioning that need to be evaluated are accepted by the Massachusetts and New Hampshire departments of education for the purpose of establishing an individual’s learning strengths and weaknesses.
